About This Place

Simple Pleasures Cafe, nestled at 3434 Balboa St in San Francisco, stands out as a vibrant and beloved community hub where the rich ritual of coffee meets a warm, inviting ambiance. This charming cafe and coffee roaster has earned its local following through a unique blend of thoughtfully roasted beans and an eclectic menu that caters to both coffee aficionados and food lovers alike.

What sets Simple Pleasures apart is not just their commitment to craft coffee—highlighted by offerings like their bold Simple Pleasures Dark French roast with its distinctively sharp acidity, or the environmentally conscious Organic Colombian Shade Grown Rainforest single-origin coffee—but also their inviting space that hums with a genuine neighborhood vibe. Whether you choose to settle inside away from Balboa’s persistent breeze or enjoy their outdoor seating, you’ll find a welcoming atmosphere buzzing with a mix of locals working, socializing, and soaking in live music when it’s available.

The menu here is a delightful exploration of classic favorites with a flavorful twist. Customers often rave about the Bagel and Lox, a dish that balances the smoky saltiness of lox with the comforting chew of a fresh bagel. The breakfast options, such as the Plain Bagel with Scrambled Egg and Bacon or the hearty Breakfast Bagel with Bacon, offer a satisfying start to any day. For those craving something savory and innovative, the grilled sandwiches with unexpected touches like jalapeño are beloved for adding that exciting kick, especially when enjoyed on warm, crunchy Dutch crunch bread. Sweet tooths will appreciate the delicate Almond Croissant or the luscious Key Lime Pie, each bite promising a comforting, indulgent escape.

But what truly makes Simple Pleasures Cafe feel special are the authentic customer experiences that fill its cozy corners. Visitor “drawonnoodles” highlights the café as a “community favorite” brimming with life, praising the well-crafted hot sandwiches and pastries that, though on the pricier side, maintain a quality that justifies the cost. Frances Allan notes the buzzing energy of locals engaged over “great coffee and matcha” with the cafe’s matcha standing out for its purity—unsweetened and genuine. Others, like Katia Martha, appreciate the charming ambiance and the communal feel, a place where all ages converge, laptop users mingle with friends, and there’s always a sense of belonging.

The staff’s hospitality is another defining feature, praised by customers like Sagar, who found the service not only attentive but genuinely warm—complimenting how the team took special care to answer questions and personalize coffee orders. This level of care, together with the lively backdrop of occasional live music, creates an experience that feels both energizing and restorative.

For anyone seeking a cafe that offers more than just a caffeine fix—a place where excellent coffee roasting meets an atmosphere brimming with local passion and subtle culinary surprises—Simple Pleasures Cafe is a must-visit refuge in the Richmond District. It’s a spot that invites you to savor your coffee, linger over a thoughtfully prepared bagel, and soak in the vibrant, authentic community spirit that weaves through every corner of the space.

This cozy cafe is a community favorite and is always busy. There is both indoor and outdoor seating bit I prefer to sit inside since Balboa is windy most of the time. Their hot sandwiches are really good and unique. I definitely did not expect the jalapeno in there. The dutch crunch is best enjoyed when the bread is still crunchy. Their pastries are also really good though they are kind of pricey. Wish they put the names and prices of their pastries up front.

Don’t walk by this understated exterior. Buzzing, popular coffee shop with locals working and socialising over great coffee and matcha. Genuine and unsweetened matcha. Lots of baked goods and burritos.

Rating 5 stars mainly for ambiance and because I’d go back and try other things. Really charming, cozy place with all ages gathered- seems like an established community hub. There’s people working on laptops and just hanging out. Unfortunately the thing I ordered was not satisfying but I’ll try something else next time. I ordered a chai latte and it tasted nothing like any chai I’ve had. I had my two friends take sips of my drink too to verify and they said it tasted like ginger tea. I wonder if my drink got mixed up somehow or if they ran out of chai? If they ran out, I’d rather have been told so I could’ve gotten something else. My friends enjoyed their coffees and bagels. Friendly people and great atmosphere make it worth it for me to come back, try something new, and recommend to others. Oh also! The writing on the cups was beautiful :)

I really enjoyed visiting this cafe. Food was good, staff was kind, but I would recommend checking ahead of time to see if there’s live music when you visit. It’s nice for the vibes but not the best when you’re trying to study.

I rarely give a place 5 stars, but this place deserves it because I liked everything here. The way the staff treated me, took my order, answered my questions and made my coffee. The taste of my coffee, the live music there, the amazing yummy Egyptian shortbread I asked them to warm up for me and some apricot pie I took home....I liked everything here. Asked them to blend 2 sugar in my cappuccino and they did (other places refuse to do it). Didn't have to wait here. The staff who took my order was awesome (didn't ask her name but I should have to write it here). An awesome coffee place. Love the name too. I couldn't find anything here less than 5 stars except parking....well that doesn't have anything to do with this place (it's SF). I'm saving this place in my list to come back

Simple Pleasures is a mainstay in the Outer Richmond. The roast their own coffee, their vanilla iced lattes are my personal favorite, baked goods are so good, the space is great so you can chill or work, they have an outdoor parklette, and they serve beer later in the day. I love this place.

Truly Simple Pleasures. Great coffee. Relaxed neighborhood atmosphere. I also tried the bagel+egg sandwich=not the best. Eggs were a bit sulfery from being old and added ham one thin slice for $3 ?? Still 5 STARS because it was just a great place. Simple and Pleasurable.
